Jane’s cycling story
Twelve months ago, I took the leap and signed up for a 125-mile bike ride across Scotland, from coast to coast. I didn’t pay much attention to the details initially; the idea of a cycling challenge with friends sounded thrilling enough. However, as the New Year rolled in, I began to scrutinize the route. It dawned on me that not only did I have nearly 50 miles each day, but I also faced significant climbs totalling 6,033 feet. Realizing the gravity of the challenge, I sought the expertise of Rachel’s women’s specific cycle coaching, knowledge and strength and conditioning experience as a PT to formulate a plan. Little did I know, this decision would lead to profound changes in my life.
Here are the top five ways cycling has transformed me:
1. Enhanced Physical Fitness
I have been cycling for about five years, but my hill-climbing skills were far from impressive. Rachel devised an 8-week training plan and I started attending her weekly ‘tone it up class’. She gradually increased my time on the bike, ensuring I tackled challenging hills weekly. This structured approach, together with the strength training not only prepared me for the coast-to-coast ride but also significantly improved my overall physical fitness. The incremental challenges pushed my limits, and I found myself getting stronger and more resilient with each ride.
2. Boosted Confidence
Completing the coast-to-coast ride was a massive confidence booster. Each climb I conquered during my training instilled a sense of accomplishment. By the time the actual ride came, I was ready to face any hill that came my way. The experience has given me a new perspective on hills; I’m still slow, more tortoise than hare, but I know I can get there in the end. This newfound confidence has spilled over into other areas of my life, empowering me to tackle challenges head-on.
3. Increased Motivation
The structured training plan, specific exercises in class and weekly check-ins with Rachel provided the motivation I needed to stay committed. Without this plan, I wouldn’t have spent as much time on my bike in the weeks leading up to the ride. The accountability and encouragement kept me going, even on days when I didn’t feel like cycling. The support from fellow Women On Wheels cycling buddies was invaluable, as several members took time out to accompany me and offer encouragement on particularly hilly rides.
4. Improved On Road Cycling Skills
Rachel’s help extended beyond cycle training on hills. When we reached Dalkeith on a busy Sunday morning, the roundabouts and traffic lights were daunting. However, I remembered the skills I had learned from my Zero to cycling hero course, adopted good road positioning, and confidently navigated through the traffic. This experience has made me a more competent and confident cyclist, able to handle busy urban environments with ease.
5. Mindset Shift
Reflecting on my journey, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come. Five years ago, I would have laughed at the idea of taking on such a challenge. From the Zero to cycling hero course, Women On Wheels, Breeze Rides, and now a long-distance ride, my cycling journey has been incredible. I’m excited to see where my passion for cycling will take me next. The support and training have opened up new possibilities, and I can’t wait to explore them.
Cycling has truly transformed my life in ways I never imagined. I owe a huge thanks to Rachel and everyone who supported me with my cycling and hill training. The journey has been tough but immensely rewarding, and I’m eager to see what new adventures lie ahead.
